FORAnGen: Bavarian Research Group for the Design of Sustainable Products Using Generative Design

Generative design has the potential to open unimagined possibilities in product development by recording the diverse requirements for components and generating optimized design variants largely automated on a formalized basis of these requirements. The research consortium intends to apply Generative Design to mitigate the extensive impacts of our society's high energy and resource consumption. Thus, the consortium aims to "FORAnGen" through the design of sustainable products using Generative Design in future-oriented product development. The primary focus of this planned research consortium is to support the development of products that are not only energy- and resource-efficient, thus environmentally friendly, but also robust and resilient under varying boundary conditions and external disturbances.

Accordingly, FORAnGen strives to address these diverse challenges through the application of Generative Design. This approach facilitates a more efficient development of optimized components and products compared to conventional product development methods that do not employ Generative Design. Furthermore, this emerging Generative Design methodology will be expanded to include aspects of manufacturing feasibility and sustainability assessment, enhancing its practical viability. Achieving this objective will empower companies to efficiently develop responsible products that fulfill industrial standards and simultaneously minimize ecological footprints. The practical implementation of Generative Design and the integration of sustainability aspects will significantly contribute to fostering future-oriented and sustainable product development within the Bavarian economy.

Generative Design

The four academic partners combine complementary expertise, establishing a robust foundation for the research consortium. Engineering Design and CAD at the University of Bayreuth and Product Development and Lightweight Design at the Technical University of Munich concentrate on requirement acquisition as well as software implementation and integration. Manufacturing Technology at Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Casting, Composite, and Processing Technology in Augsburg  oversee the manufacturing implementation of developed concepts and ensure process validation. This interdisciplinary collaboration facilitates a comprehensive approach to the challenges posed and enables the development of innovative solutions.
